Ahhh lighting fixtures! I've discovered a beautiful obsession with them, an obsession that is expensive, but makes all the difference to the interior design of a home. They add a touch of elegance, refinement and distinguish a thoughtful, high-end space from a regular one.

We may not always notice it, but light is perhaps one of the most important elements in interior design. Lighting plays a role in our perceptions, moods and can create unique sensations and experiences. Lighting fixtures are often works of art in a room, they deserve our attention.

Floor lamps, pendant lighting, wall lamps, table and desk lamps - these are just some of the options available when developing a lighting plan. How did we choose everything? Well, by looking at the lighting trends for 2022, and ensuring some cohesion with the style of each room and our home. All the fixtures were carefully selected by our Blanc Marine designers, and purchased (some received) from Union Lighting. Use the code Kimberley15 to get 15% off the entire Union site!

Guideline for home lighting

Organic style lighting

We have a penchant for materials that are noble and raw. This is why most of our lighting fixtures are made of bronze, brass or linen. The organic style is predominant in our home due to its perfect mix of functionality and luxury. Characteristic or nature-like tones are the key to this design trend.

A touch of classic vintage with candlesticks

Mixing the modern with the old is a style I love and one that is popular with many designers these days. That's why we opted for several hanging chandeliers, in the entrance, in the outdoor areas and in the master bedroom.

Choosing timeless luminaires - the key for us

We know how expensive it is to buy our lights, so we wanted to make sure we chose classics that would age well with us. The theme of our home is an organic, European style. So we wanted our lights to reflect that style.

How to choose your lighting fixtures?

Choosing lighting for a space is a multi-faceted process that takes into account many different key factors. Here's a checklist to select the best lighting for your space, but first, some of our choices for the home.

Step 1: Establish a lighting budget

It is important to set a budget before you start shopping for lighting, as the price of lighting can quickly rise. The price of a light fixture varies depending on the style of the material and the designer. Prices can range anywhere from $150 to 10-15K (!!!). Some fixtures are practically works of art!

For our part, we have opted for affordable luxury fixtures. It is still very important to budget for lighting fixtures, as this is something that contractors often neglect. Don't forget to calculate the bulb requirements!

Step 2: Determine the lighting requirements for the house

How many pendant luminaires will you need? What about flush lights? Do the math and ask yourself if there is one that is more important to you than the other, that's where you can use most of the budget. Don't forget to calculate your outdoor and standing lights.

Step 3: Adopt an overall style for the house

Choosing an overall look for the fixtures and not choosing one fixture at a time is the key to having a certain homogeneity in the spaces and feeling that there is a coherence between the rooms. My tip: use Canva and make a moodboard with your favourite lights! Need some inspiration? Here is my Pinterest.

Step 4: Define the objectives of each luminaire

Ask yourself these questions for each of your fixtures:

  • Is it a decorative light?

  • How much light do I need?

  • What is the desired quality of light?

  • Will I also have recesses in these areas?

Step 5: Make your choices!

Choose your lights and make sure you triple-check your budget. Since we had lights to select for the whole house, we decided to buy everything in one place to simplify the process.

Where did I purchase my lights?

This article is written in collaboration with Union LightingUnion Lighting, a beautiful Montreal (and family-owned) company that was founded in 1914. I initially purchased several of the house's lights with Union Lighting for the light fixtures in our house and was then offered a few as well for this great collaboration.

Our process was to choose the fixtures we wanted for the house first and then go to Union to find and purchase them. Thankfully, Union Lighting had all of the brands in our final selection, which really simplified the buying process. They also do a price match, so if you find the same model cheaper elsewhere, they can match the price.

So there you have it! Hope you like our choices! The Milton Roads are my favourite of our selection, how about you?

Here's another fixture I LOVE!
